Hi Vince,

Right now Citrix XenServer guests can be backed up using the Backup Agent (Windows/Linux) or network file system protocols like CIFS and SSHFS which provide the granularity to restore individual files, folders and applications. Entire guests can be recovered however this would be similar to restoring a physical machine in that we'd push back the System State or perform a Bare Metal restore. The next intended developments in virtualization will be feature parity between VMware and Hyper-V.

Now that XenServer is moving back to its roots in the open source community its transparency will benefit many developers in this space. If you're interested in backing up XenServer's virtual disk files I'd like to encourage you to start a topic within the Feature Requests segment of of the forum as I couldn't see one that existed so far. This will help us to gather interest across our members.
