I would like to know a simple way to do this as well.  Right now, I can only think of creating exceptions for each site that I know apple uses for iOS downloads.  There are many, and they keep cahnging, so it is not a viable option.  We are at a school with a partion 1:1 iPad initiative, and when apple comes out with 2GB of app updates and the iPads start downloading them automatically because they are free updates, it is pretty easy for the school's network to come crashing down for an afternoon.

http://www.enterpriseios.com/story/2013/09/17/How_to_use_DNS_to_block_iOS_7_and_other_updates_too says that a single URL is used to see if an update is available.  mesu.apple.com is the DNS name.  You could block that specific domain in the filter or use the DNS approach the article suggests.
